The European School of Trieste offers its students a wide selection of extracurricular courses, available from early childhood education to after the completion of middle school.

Advanced and Proficiency

Afternoon Advanced and Proficiency English language courses (CAE, CPE) for secondary school students

Mastering Language Excellence: CAE and PCE Afternoon Course
Afternoon Advanced Courses at E.S.T.

The European School of Trieste offers the possibility for many ex-middle school pupils to attend afternoon courses in preparation for the University of Cambridge ESOL examinations. The two exams are the CAE (Certificate of Advanced English – C1 level) and the CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English – C2 level). Both exams are recognised worldwide for most university and college applications as well as many international corporations.

A CAE course is restricted to between 5-10 students per course, while a CPE course is between 4-6 students.

The teachers are Mr. Newbould and Miss Colman and the courses take place at the European School of Trieste between Monday and Thursday with a timetable of 2:45-4:15 p.m. There are 30 lessons of 90 minutes during an academic year. Generally, the CAE courses run from September to June for the first two years of secondary school with an additional 10 lessons between September and December during their third year, therefore allowing the students to get their credits.

Due to the increasing enrolments in the E.S.T. middle school in recent years, taking part in a CAE course will unfortunately not be guaranteed to all students. Pupils who have passed the Cambridge “First for Schools” examination in their third year of Middle School with a pass grade of “A”, should be guaranteed a place on a CAE course and, depending on numbers, also pupils who have passed with a “B” grade.

A similar method will apply to potential CPE pupils. Being a particularly difficult exam, students will have to have passed the CAE with a grade “A” or “B” to be guaranteed a place. These restrictions are necessary due to the many students attending the middle school, the fact that there are two teachers available and limited space, and to keep the afternoon courses competitive with other language schools in Trieste.

The overall statistics for the two exams between 1998 and 2022 are the following: CAE (Advanced): 73 students. Pass 67/Fail 6 = 91.8% pass ratio (A=13; B=17; C=37) CPE (Proficiency): 28 students. Pass 25/Fail 3 = 89.3% pass ratio (A=4; B=9; C=12)
